One Small Thing: Easter

It’s Easter and many kids are vigorously searching for eggs. Their parents stand by and watch as the carefully hidden eggs were revealed. At school, art lessons turn into ‘make-your-own-egg’ factories. There are eggs with dots and eggs with squiggles. When did this holiday start and why is it there?

Everyone knows Halloween and Christmas. Halloween is the day of the dead, but people changed it to a day where kids dress up and ask for candy. When kids think of Christmas, all they see are presents piled high, but it actually celebrates the birth of Christ. So what’s Easter? Easter is a holiday that celebrates Christ’s resurrection. What does it have to do with rabbits and eggs? It is true that some holidays are altered, but they are still based on the reason why it’s being celebrated. What does a rabbit have to do with Christ? Also, rabbits are mammals so they don’t lay eggs. Why do they carry a basket of eggs around? If they carried a basket of chocolate bunnies around, then it makes more sense, but then it doesn’t. No animal will give their off springs to someone to eat.

The Christians believe that the eggs symbolize the tomb and rebirth of Jesus. The eggshell is like a tomb, but it hatches into a bird, and so it gives life. In this case, shouldn't it be the Easter Bird? Also, many people think that the Easter Bunny is a male, since many chocolate bunnies are wrapped with gold, and around the neck there is a bow-tie. The idea of a male, egg-laying rabbit is very strange. There are many explanations for the Easter Bunny and the eggs, but the children shouldn't get carried away thinking how Easter is only a holiday to decorate and find eggs.
